Genesis 2:15-17
15 And the Lord God took the man, Adam, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat:
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it: for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.

Just what is the “Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil?”  Is it a real tree, or is the tree just a symbol?  Manasseh says it is a symbol, and I hope he will put his comments here about it.  I also think it is a symbol, but a symbol of what?

Genesis 3:1-13
Blessings….c

Here is a thought I have, it may or may not be related.  What were Adam and Eve before they sinned by eating the fruit of this tree?  They were innocent, their eyes were protected from seeing anything wrong or evil.  Maybe there was no wrong or evil around them.  But my thought here is, they were innocent and enjoyed the fellowship with one another and with God as children enjoy playing together with their best friend and the company of their loving parents.

Now the serpent was more subtile than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, has God really said, You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, You shall not surely die:
5 For God does know that in the day you eat of it, then your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.
9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where are you?
10 And he said, I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
11 And he said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree, where I commanded you that thou should not eat?
12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that you have done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

Here is the other part of my thought, and I will leave this as an open question and not put in the rest of my thought – because I want to see what others will write.  My question, “What is it, or what is something, that once introduced into a child’s life takes away their innocence?  Could this something possibly be related to the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil?”
I will tell you my thoughts after I read some of yours…I am just curious as if someone will get the same thoughts as I have had this morning.
Love to you all and I’m looking forward to any replies.  :)

  1. Hi All,
Long back when I was reading genesis (one of the few books i read in OT), i thought of this tree and the fruit a lot. Then 2 years back when I watched the movie “knowing” I got the hint and since then i got it that the tree is a big symbol. :) It is all related to what we see and believe.
For me the tree of life is a good fellowship which grows big with the help of water (words) and there we have to eat the fruits. This is my understanding; I might miss something but m just sharing my points here.

I didnt had much more interest recently on this but when Carolyn talked about the tree, i thought to look for it and while reading I found many good insights in the bible app (QuickVerse) which is close to my thoughts and it helped me understand it more better. Thoughts while I was reading insights:
    1. The evil was not initiated by Adam, because: The name of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil implies that evil had already occurred, if not in the garden, then at the time of Satan’s fall.
    2. In the same chapter we can also meditate on, why bible has the tree in a real picture but symbolic for us:
Were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil real trees? Two views are often expressed:
    - The trees were real, but symbolic. Eternal life with God was pictured as eating from the tree of life.
    - The trees were real, possessing special properties. By eating the fruit from the tree of life, Adam and Eve could have had eternal life, enjoying a permanent relationship as God’s children.
In either case, Adam and Eve’s sin separated them from the tree of life and thus kept them from obtaining eternal life. Interestingly, the tree of life again appears in a description in Revelation 22 of people enjoying eternal life with God.
    3. Now this thought is very deep and while reading I thought of all this, bcaz I always thought all the time, why God even put such a tree?? This insight helped me see the answer: God gave Adam responsibility for the garden and told him not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Rather than physically preventing him from eating, God gave Adam a choice to make and, thus, the possibility of choosing wrongly. God still gives us choices, and we, too, often choose wrongly. These wrong choices may cause us pain, but they can help us learn and grow and make better choices in the future. Living with the consequences of our choices teaches us to think and choose more carefully. Why would God place a tree in the garden and then forbid Adam to eat from it? God wanted Adam to obey, but God gave Adam the freedom to choose. Without choice, Adam would have been like a prisoner, and his obedience would have been hollow. The two trees provided an exercise in choice, with rewards for choosing to obey and sad consequences for choosing to disobey. When you are faced with the choice, always choose to obey God.

    1. Oh, hello Manasseh :)
I had not "subscribed by email" to this post, so I didn't know anyone had posted anything here! I am so glad to read what you wrote and the things you have posted from the insights of your bible app. Its a really great app and gives great insights, maybe you could put the whole name of the app here, maybe even put a link if there is a website to this app? :) It is near my bed time and I am too tired to think much about replies at the moment, but I am enjoying reading what you wrote here :) thank you...c

  2. some more i want to say here...
Here is one more thought from the insights I found about Adam and Eve before the tree came into picture. This is what i also believe and i think Carolyn too, as per our chat we had about this topic: “Have you ever noticed how a little child can run naked through a room full of strangers without embarrassment? He is not aware of his nakedness, just as Adam and Eve were not embarrassed in their innocence. But after Adam and Eve sinned, shame and awkwardness followed, creating barriers between themselves and God. We often experience these same barriers in marriage. Ideally a husband and wife have no barriers, feeling no embarrassment in exposing themselves to each other or to God. But, like Adam and Eve (3:7), we put on fig leaves (barriers) because we have areas we don’t want our spouse, or God, to know about. Then we hide, just as Adam and Eve hid from God. In marriage, lack of spiritual, emotional, and intellectual intimacy usually precedes a breakdown of physical intimacy. In the same way, when we fail to expose our secret thoughts to God, we break our lines of communication with him.”
I have learned this from Carolyn during the chat, which is something new for me about innocence. We all know Jesus said the kingdom of heaven is of Children. That dsnt mean only children can enter, but it meant ppl like child hearts with innocence. That’s what it showed in the movie “Knowing”.
I will say if you guys have time please watch that movie. It is one of my fav, caz of the way they interoperated scriptures in it is awesome, that’s why it was a flop movie caz current world cannot accept such deep truth.
I can write so much about this topic caz I love this talk.. :)
we welcome everyone’s view here. we want to learn more about the word of God so please join us.

    1. Oh, as you know, Manasseh, my husband and I watched that movie "Knowing" recently per your recommendation. :) It was a good movie, a little odd or strange, and I could make a study of the movie as we do with the lyrics of song writers, but like people who write songs, this movie took its own interpretation of things and therefore it was a little strange. I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone who might want to watch it. I really do have some thoughts about this discussion, but I'm too tired to think much now so will have to come back later. I'm really glad you posted here. Thank you :)

    2. I didnt find it at all strange.. this is exact what Bible is talking about and thats why it was a big flop all over world. caz no one can see the real fact its showing thru simple concept. thats what we all miss what all is simple, we dont grasp it easily, caz its hard to believe and we think is it this simple?? so why i cudnt see it yet?

every single thing in this muvie is perfectly related to bible and yes it has not served the food, it just cooked the food to we can eat it and digest it, but again we have to help our self serve it. atleast!!.. m open for any kind of discussion, please Carolyn dont be afraid to talk about it, ppl anyway dsnt like this muvie and its not as per their liking, if God dsnt want this muvie to be the only source of His wisdom, He can use anything the way He has been using to reach us. :)

    3. Oh Manasseh, what I meant as "strange" in the movie was how they portrayed the angels as these tall men who didn't talk and were almost kind of scary. But I guess angels do scare people at first when they see them. But the little boy wanted to run the first time one was near him. That and the way the transported the children...that was the strange part of the movie, but I agree with you that there is a lot from the bible i can pull out of this movie. :)

God uses the whole world and all of creation to reach us. He is speaking to us always and showing us his love. If we look and listen we can always find his love.

  3. Reach Out To Your World

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit Matthew 28:19

Our primary responsibility on earth is to preach the Gospel to those in our world making disciples of those in our sphere of contact. That's what Jesus meant when he said Go ye therefore and teach all nations. In Greek nation is referred as ethnos which refers to a group pf people with common interest. Making disciples of those in your ethnos means reaching out to them with the message of the gospel teaching them how to live by God's Word.

In Matthew 13:44 The Parable of Hidden Treasure. In this parable a man happens to find a treasure hidden in a field. He covers it up again, and is so happy that he goes and sells everything he has, and then he goes back and buys that field. What was more important to the man wasn't the field but the treasure in the field. In the same way, God is more interested in the souls you can win to Him in your sphere of contact.

The reason we are on our job is because God sent us there to turn those in darkness to His marvellous light. He wants you to reach out to them with the message of eternal life.

    2. Yes, I agree, Manasseh! Vipul, this is a wonderful post !!!
It is so good to read these words of wisdom from the Lord through you! To break it down into something small that people can actually grasp. Sometimes we get overwhelmed with the worries going on all around the world and we think, "What can I do?" But, as you said, the Lord shows us that we need to teach those in our sphere... this is a good word!
      Thank you for posting! :)
